    Hi Barefoot team!

I was wondering if you had any advice(s) about the best equipment and strategy to share and teach surfing to kids. I am an intermediate surfer and dad of two girls around 5/6 years and I am struggling to see how I will manage their surfing debut ! Any advices or tutorials would be welcome so I can share the fun with them 🙂

    Cheers from South West France,

    Hi Damien,

To be honest we don’t have much experience teaching 5/6 year olds.

I would say: get a small foamboard or rent one, so that they are safe, and also keep an eye on surf conditions. You would probably aim for a 1-2 feet day, so that they can learn to surf in tiny waves while feeling safe. We have friends that have kids that age and a few of them can get a bit scared if they wipe out in waves that feel a bit big to them, and sometimes it can be months before they want to go back out in the water.

Hope this helps and I might drop further advice here in the future when my 1-year-old gets a bit older haha.

Many thanks Gabriel for these advices. In France (and I think in Canada too, at least in Qc), Decathlon has a great choice of foamboard. I am considering buying a 6’8 to start with. Totally agree with your words about choosing the right conditions. I will also drop some comments here when I will have shared some sessions with the kids!
