I’d love to progress with longboarding and would like to buy a board accordingly. So far I was riding a 9′ softtop longboard. Now I was thinking about getting myself a 9′ hard one, but read online that for a beginner in longboarding a 9’6 is better suited. What are your thoughts on that? (I’m 169cm & 65kg, started surfing 1997, have been surfing on/off for a very long time, but since 2 years surf weekly. Most of the time I surf in Northern Italy.)

    Hi Valérie,

The difference between a 9 or 9’6 probably won’t be a big one for a surfer of your weight if the dimensions are similar (width and thickness). Have you been through the “equipment for beginners” course? It’s important you understand the concept of “Volume”. It will give you a better idea of how a board floats and how easy it is to paddle and catch waves on than just the length.

One thing though. If the waves you surf in Italy are very small and weak, you might want to consider buying a bigger board. It will help you catch waves more easily, as well as to keep your momentum even if waves don’t have much power.

    Hope this helps 🙂
